Last class - July 21st

We had our last class on the 21st. We gave our facilities presentations. That went well b/c we only had two to do. We had a few PR projects to finish up on. All of those were really good and everyone had some great ideas. Another thing we started were the Resident Expert presentations. Our group went second. We volunteered really quick b/c we knew we wouldn't have anything else to present after that!! The first group's went way over hour long so we felt like we had to rush our presentation. Plus we didn't just want to read out a bunch of facts. The first group played a Jeopardy game on the requirements of getting a license for Librarians. That was very informative!! I think I need to start studying for the PRAXIS now!!

Last Resident Expert Meeting

Tonight our group met for the last time to go over our power point presentation for Professional Ethics. I think we're going to have a great presentation. I like working with Jerri for projects. She has done a lot with this project. She is the one that scanned all of our materials into qwaq and finished up our resource guide. Rebecca was in our group as well. She made our copies of all the handouts for the presentation. I hope we get to present tonight so I will be finished with everything!!

Last Class Tuesday July 7, 2009

During our last class we met with Librarian Gerry. She is the librarian over the state or something like that...she works through UNC..I think. I should have wrote that part down. Anyways, she gave us a powerpoint about the library as a facility and gave us the top ten key areas to a good library. I wrote them all down, but many of them I would not have thought about being so important. There is really a lot to think about when planning to build a library or remodel a library. For our next assignment we were split into two groups and we have to remodel or make changes to a library. We chose Rebecca's library and she works at Chesterfield Elementary. She sent us pictures through email today. It looks like a really cute library. I hope you she has some changes in mind! We are meeting Monday before Dr. Rob's class at 3. So we'll see...

Also my Resident Expert group put together our links for our teacher guide. We met with Dr. Nita last week and she said everything look great, but we needed something that teachers could use. We each came up with three more links and wrote annotations for each of them and then emailed them Jerri so she could compile everything.

PR project

I have everything done for my PR project. I had to make a display board that would go in the front of the school that is more or less informational on our Multicultural Day Celebration. I used a lot of bright colors and I printed out block letters on the computer. Then I had to cut all of the out. I made a sign that listed all of the cultures studied and made an example of an interest letter to parents. I also found some pictures of different passports from the different countries that are to be studied. I copied and pasted them onto a word document, printed them, then cut them out. I think the board looks great and is not too cluttered.

Qwaq Meeting with Librarian Geri

Well I'm glad I waited to do this blog because it wouldn't be a very nice blog if I had done this right after our meeting with Librarian Geri. I could not get the Qwaq program to work correctly for my computer. I think many of us kept getting knocked out of the program and we had no clue what was being said by Librarian Geri. I think we should have just went to the AET zone because we all know it works on our computer. All I know is that she did a presentation on resource guides. My computer is so slow with the Qwaq program. Once I finally got the room up, my avetar wouldn't move anywhere, then when it did move, everything eventually froze causing me to exit the whole program. Technology can be really frustrating to me. It is not something that I get super excited about and I sortive dread that part of being a librarian. I know how to email, and I can usually figure things out and get things to work again, but the other night was a nightmare. Anyways, I don't have anything to write about what I learned, just a few complaints. Maybe better luck next time.

Resident Expert Meeting

My group for the resident expert meeting met this afternoon before our 5020 class. We were able to finalize our professional development for our ethics presentation. Our powerpoint looks great. We add a few things and took away a few things. Everything is cited and ready to go! Rebecca is going to make some copies of our skit and copies of our handouts. I don't think we are going to have to meet again for this project. It feels really good to be finished with this project. I am working with a great group!

PR Project Update

Yesterday my group, Tina, Vern, Crystal, and I met at CopperBean in Hickory to talk about our project. We knew we wanted to do a multicultural literacy theme but we weren't sure of the details yet. We were able to get everything planned out. Vern is going to make a powerpoint that will be for the teachers that we plan to introduce our literacy program too. This will include most of the timeline that Crystal typed up. And basically explaining everyone's roles. I am going to make a display board that will go in front of the school that telling everyone about the upcoming project and I will write a letter of interest that will go home with parents as well. Crystal is going to make a photostory of different pics found from the internet of various animals and cultural things about the different countries that we will explore for the multicultural day. Tina is going to make an example of what a display board might look like for one of the countries booths that will be set up on multicultural day. I think we have a really good plan and it will be easy for anyone to pick up and use. I don't think we will have to meet anymore between now and July 7th when it's due. I'm glad I was able to work with responsible people for this project!!

Resident Expert Meeting

Yesterday I met with Jerri for the Resident Expert project. Rebecca wasn't able to make it, but Jerri and I were able to get a lot accomplished in just a few hours. I had printed some info and she had some info and finally we worked out an outline. Then we got our outline to a powerpoint. We haven't made our powerpoint look "cute yet" but we plan to meet with Rebecca on Monday right before Dr. Rob's class around 3:00. Our topic is Professional Ethics and Issues. We found a skit and some funny scenarios that will make our professional development a little more fun and light hearted! Can't wait to see the results and how it all comes together!

PR Project thoughts

My group for the PR project is me, Tina, Crystal, and Vern. I am excited about working with these fine young ladies! I know everyone will pull their part on the project! We've already decided on a great topic. Tina actually thought of the idea and come to find out Crystal and Vern already have experience of doing this idea at their own schools. We are wanting to do a multi-cultural literacy night with food, music, and books. I think this will be a great way to get various types of people to come out and support a school's media program. I think it looks good too with among colleagues of the media coordinator!

mini report

This was our first assignment, but I forgot to blog about it! The title of my article was "What We Want: Boys and Girls Talk about Reading", from the ALA. This article was an interesting case study on why boys perform lower on their EOG's in reading. Basically their findings were that boys are not getting to read more of the things that they are interested in. If the library doesn't have anything that boys are interested in, then they are not going to read. Makes sense to me! Most of the article is made up of statistics of the different questions that were given to a group of thirty five boys age 10 to 13. Some of the questions that were given Do you like to read for pleasure, why or why not?, what would you rather do than read?, and Do the men in your family read? There were 19 questions that were asked about reading.

Last Class & Power chart

Last night we had our third class for the summer. We talked about Budgeting for school libraries and writing grants. The budget part reminded me a lot of the things that I have to do with an art budget. Dr. Nita mentioned to not brag about all of the things that you are able to purchase, even though the materials that are ordered are for the whole school. I try not to brag or say too much about how much I've spent on art materials because people don't realize that my budget goes towards everyone student in the school. We have to have a little more than markers and pens. The writing grant part was a little overwhelming. I know I may have to do this some day, but I feel like I'm not the best writer. This part I'm not looking forward to dealing with. Another thing we talked about is our school mission statement. We got into groups and part of our homework was to come up with a mission statement and a brief outline on policy and procedures. We got most of that done in class, so it won't take us long to work on this.

Our previous homework assignment was to create a power chart of an organization. I created mine on my middle school. We had to pick the formal leaders, informal leaders, and the information brokers. This was interesting to put together because everyone already knows or thinks about who has the "power" but we just put it down on paper. They all connect and tie together in their roles with the librarian. If the librarian wants to order something she goes to get a form from the bookkeeper. Then the principal has to approve it. Many of the materials that librarians try to get are things that other teachers can use. So it's good to have good relations with the teachers as well.

First Post!

Just setting this up for Dr. Nita's class!
